The change in the name from UTSC to ITSC became possible by a contract between ASM/DVS and the International Institute of Welding (IIW) which was signed during the IIW Annual Assembly 1998 in Hamburg. According to this contract IIW will not continue to organise own conferences in the field of thermal spraying but will support the conferences jointly organised by ASM and DVS as a sponsor. By this contract ASM and DVS also received the permission to use both, the IIW logo and the conference name "International Thermal Spray Conference" (ITSC).
With the contract, the societies took into account of a wish for co-ordination of the programme events, as has already been expressed for a long time by those companies in the field of thermal spraying with worldwide activities.
